My name is Bronwyn Waipuka-Callander and I am a contemporary Maori artist living in Waipu, Northland.

Art has been a significant part of my life because as far as I can remember I have always been creative in some way or another. Largely self-taught, my experiences have included exhibitions in New Zealand, Australia and New York.

My current style and medium is in the form of giclee fine art printing which I graphically create with my computer and output using my Epson Stylus 3880 printer. Recent themes and kaupapa (ideas) for my work have come from concepts such as Mana Wāhine (female divine energies) and Papatūānuku (the love and appreciation for Mother Earth). My work comes directly from the heart and often contains many layers of deeper meaning.

Inspiration comes from reading about leading women in Māori history, Atua Wāhine (female deities) and female role models within my own Whānau and Whakapapa (genealogy). Other influences have also come from my interest in researching and learning about the affects post colonialism has had on Māori culture and our people.

I am very fortunate to be doing something I am passionate about which is largely due to the love and support of my husband, Richard. I am also grateful for the ongoing encouragement and praise from Whānau, friends and those who continue to be inspired by my work.
